Chapter 10

Without giving it a second thought, I grabbed whatever was closest to me, which on further inspection turned out to be some kind of ancient terracotta urn with intricate markings, and I launched it at the security guard’s already surprised face.

He might’ve been a relatively even sparring partner, especially if he turned out to be magical, simply because of just how massive he was. But he didn’t even have a chance to try because the urn flew through the air and smacked into his forehead like a bullseye. He blinked once and then crumpled to the ground like a smashed-up Lego figurine, and Indira just turned to face me with an eyebrow raised.

“Quick thinking,” she commented with a wry smile, and I huffed out a laugh and shrugged nonchalantly.

Then we hurried over to the security guard to check he was still breathing. I didn’t want to kill him, since it was highly unlikely he was a member of the Atroba. Poor guy was just doing his job.

He had a huge blue bruise already forming between his eyes, but he was thankfully still breathing, so I quickly hauled him into a corner and took his flashlight off his utility belt. Then I quickly checked him over for any kind of communication device he might’ve carried.

He didn’t have a walkie-talkie, so that meant there would hopefully be no one waiting in a security room staring at the CCTV footage in surprise. He did have a cell phone, though, which I quickly pocketed so he couldn’t call the cops on us if he woke up.

“Gonna take the poor guy’s cell as well as his flashlight?” Indira chuckled as she helped me drag the security guard over to the broken urn’s pedestal.

“I’ll give them back.” I stuck my tongue out at her and then laughed. “I’ll also sweep the urn pieces over here around him, so maybe he’ll think he tripped, knocked himself out, and hallucinated us.”

“Hopefully,” Indira said pointedly. “The less people that know about the codex, the better.”

“You’re right.” I nodded and took a moment to set my fake accident scene. It wouldn’t hold up against much scrutiny, but my women and I would be long gone by then. Once I had arranged the security guard and urn pieces as best as I could, I dusted my hands off and turned back to my girlfriend. “I guess we’d better do some hunting, then. This place is huge.”

“How are we ever gonna find this thing?” Indira muttered as we stood in the middle of the museum.

I’d been to big city museums, and though the outside of this place was nondescript and pretty small, the Museum of Desert Antiquities was actually gigantic. It obviously housed magical items, since it was where we would find our codex, but I started to wonder just how many desert antiquities there could possibly be.

“Do you think there’s some Area 51 stuff lying around in here?” I wondered out loud.

“I mean, yeah, it wouldn’t surprise me at all,” the snowy owl shifter giggled.
